1. RAPID PROTOTYPING FOR MEDICAL HANDLE ASSEMBLY

A. Problem/Issue

A Medical Extrusion/Catheter Products Company needed a concept to activate a device on the distal end of a catheter. They had a crude prototype that communicated the principal needed. They needed an ergonomic handle that would use the thumb to deploy the assembly in two different modes. Their physician consultant/inventor explained what was necessary.

B. Analysis

We concepted three approaches and met with them to refine the design. They chose one of the concepts and we proceeded to adjust the sketch to meet further requirements they wanted after seeing possible concepts. A final design was modeled and provided to them for a design review. Taking the rest of the modifications from the team, we proceeded to CAD model the latest design using Pro-Engineer.

C. Solution/Results

We researched SLA, SLS, Casting, and FDM to determine the best fit for the intended use. After satisfying all of their requirements, we rapid prototyped (SLA) the 7-piece assembly and delivered it to them for approval. Total time from concept to prototype was 60 days! We continue to provide support for this product on an as-needed basis.
